What Is a Quiz Night?
New to quiz nights? Here’s what happens, what to expect, and how to have a great time at your first trivia night.

You’ve heard friends rave about quiz night, but what actually happens? Think pub trivia meets game show: teams, questions, laughter, and gloriously heated debates about 80s one-hit wonders.
Here’s your beginner’s guide — what to expect, how it works, and how to be a great teammate even if you “know nothing.”
How a quiz night works
You join a team (or get assigned one), grab answer sheets, and the host reads questions in rounds — usually 5–6 rounds covering general knowledge, music, pictures, and wild cards. You discuss, write answers, and hand them in for scoring between rounds.
Most nights last 90 minutes to two hours with a break in the middle. Winners get prizes (often silly), but the real prize is the debate over whether that actor was in that movie.
You don’t need to be a genius
The secret of great quiz teams: diversity beats brilliance. The sports fan, the music nerd, the history buff, and the person who watches too much reality TV each cover a round. Everyone contributes somewhere.
New players often win rounds on pure guesswork and lateral thinking. Confidence in a wild guess has won more quizzes than encyclopedic knowledge ever will.
First-timer tips
Bring a pen, arrive early for good seats, and don’t be afraid to join a team that needs players — quiz people are famously welcoming. Agree on a team name (puns strongly encouraged) and nominate one person to write final answers.
Most importantly: phones away during questions. Half the fun is the group debate, and the honor system is what makes quiz night special.
